How Summer Camp Helps Your Kids!

There are only so many ways to keep kids engaged at home during the seemingly endless summer holidays. Before long, the children are bored, you are at your wits end and you turn to screens to keep them entertained. To avoid just such a scenario many of us opt to send them to a summer camp. But did you know that summer camps do a lot more for your little ones than just getting them out of the house? From making them independent to developing necessary life skills, the benefits are numerous!

Making New Friends

All a child knows is home and school but at summer camp they meet other kids under a completely different setting. There are team-building exercises where they learn to work together, icebreaker activities where they get to know more about each other and friendships are built based on shared interests – whether it is robotics or theatre. So, at a young age they learn the importance of networking and learning from peers!

Learn Skills

Your child might be interested in story writing, or learning about science or space, but they need opportunities to develop these skills. At summer camp they have the right environment, as well as the time to learn the activities or skills that interest them. There is access to trainers, equipment and infrastructure to help them hone a new skill. As an added benefit, mastering a new skill or improving on one will be a major boost to their confidence.

Free play

A child’s day is filled with structure and routine from the moment they get up. Getting ready for the day, school, after-school activities – everything is on schedule. But we all need to let loose sometime and summer camp gives them a much-needed opportunity to just be. There is a certain flexibility to the their day. They get to play games, be silly and laugh with friends, and relax! At summer camp, children are given enough time for free play and to enjoy the holidays, thereby creating great memories.

Staying active!

Summer break doesn’t mean lazing around and sleeping in. Kids need to get enough physical activity and mental stimulation even during the holidays. At summer camp, kids learn to try new things and take risks within the safe confines of the camp environment and under the supervision of camp counselors.  They can try new sports or outdoor activities, and have healthy competition with their peers. This ensures the right blend of work and play for the all-round development of your child.

Become independent

Without parents or teachers around at camp, children learn to make some decisions for themselves. There is a certain level of freedom at summer camp that helps them test their boundaries and rely on themselves and peers to make certain choices, rather than on an adult. In this way kids learn how to make the right decision, which enables them to be empowered and independent.

At Amelio’s summer camps, your child will learn real-world skills while still having fun. They will be exposed to a range of activities, but still have time to explore what interests them. Most importantly, friendships will be built and memories made. Find out more about what we offer, and give your child a summer to remember!

Why Vijayadasami is the Perfect Time to Start Your Child at a Preschool

Admissions open at Amelio's preschool program

Your toddler is one little busy body and you are probably wondering when might be a good time to start her off at preschool. Have you considered enrolling her in a preschool this Vijayadasami?

Vijayadasami is an auspicious time in South India for initiation of formal education for children. It is usually on this day that children start their learning of music and the arts. Since this is a wonderful day for new beginnings, it could also be the ideal time to start your toddler on her preschool experience. Here are some reasons why:

  1. Rituals encourage readiness:

When the child and the parent go through a ritual of initiation, both ready themselves for commitment into that endeavour. If you think about any ritual you follow at home, notice how it requires commitment, planning and involvement. And these three ingredients are key to any successful initiative. When you start your child with a ritual such as the Vidyarambham, there is a greater chance that you are more committed, planned and involved. And that would mean a much easier transitioning process for your child.

  1. Get a head-start on learning

Most schools start enrolling children from June but initiate admissions only around December/ January of the previous year. Your child could greatly benefit from spending time in a preschool environment as a start to her formal schooling. A good preschool program such as Amelio’s will give your child a safe environment with loving and supportive teachers. She will be encouraged to learn through her own initiative thereby building her self-esteem and readiness to formal schooling.

  1. Make those first besties

Usually, many children enroll in preschools around Vijayadasami therefore creating a lovely, cosy group of children and parents who start their journey of education in each other’s company. They form friendships for life and proceed on to schooling and other experiences together. It’s a beautiful way to get your child initiated into learning, also socially.

At Amelio, we have an award-winning preschool program that is designed to enhance your child’s learning outcomes.

We have limited seats for our preschool program and they fill up fast! To know more about how we help your child get a head start, call us at 91760 24000 now!

Nurturing an early reader

Reading is an essential skill your child will need throughout his/her life and teaching your child to read is one of the most valuable tasks you will ever undertake as a parent. Children benefit from learning to read early and it is the key to opening your child’s creativity and imagination. Helping your little one develop a love for reading will be one of the best gifts you can give them.  Since very young children can’t read by themselves yet, reading to them each day is an important first step a parent needs to adopt.

Reading to a child helps:

  • Promote linguistic skills
  • Develop longer attention spans
  • Strengthen parent-child bond
  • Build self-confidence
  • Improve logical thinking ability

Start reading to your child from the moment he or she is born. It is never too early to encourage your child to develop a love of reading. Early readers are motivated towards learning in general as from a young age, they have associated books with fun. Reading a book aloud to your baby even before they can talk provides a great opportunity for you to bond with your li’l one while they see, touch and peer over the books, hooked on to the sounds of different words.

Newborns respond to bright pictures, the rhythm of words and the comfort of a parent cuddling and speaking to them. Point to things in picture books and name them. As your child learns to talk, ask them to “point and tell.” It interests a child’s curiosity when a parent engages in a conversation with them.  Set aside a dedicated time each day for reading. Make it a part of your child’s routine.

It is important that your child is given access to books. Let your child touch, feel and experience the books. Don’t worry about tatters, what is a child’s book without a tatter or scribble? Allow your child to explore their book, but also teach them to handle books appropriately. They will learn the trade slowly.

Take your child to a regular story-telling session. These are often followed by art and craft activities and your child will associate reading with fun and pleasure.

Often, picking the right book for your child could be challenging. Board books, picture books, touch and feel books, lift the flap and Cloth and vinyl books are perfect with infants and young toddlers. Bold colors with high contrast are the easiest for young babies to see. Toddlers love simple story lines that are repetitive. Choose books with great rhymes. Babies and toddlers love the rhythm and rhyme of a simple book.
